What’s the best proofreading software that most professional writers prefer using in their text online? Is there any trusted tool that checks grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure at once?
And what if you want to keep using your actual editing tools such as Microsoft Word, or others, can you really integrate the full proofreading features into that?
And what about support for different browsers and operating systems? We all want to have good apps for Windows, Mac, or online that help us to understand our writing and editing errors with explanations and clarifications.
Nowadays, writing an eBook, a blog post or an article can take hours of proofreading, editing, and checking. Even a simple Facebook post needs at least some kind of app that catches the spelling issues.
So, there is no way to produce high-quality content without using any accurate software that checks-writing fast and allows us to get error-free writing.
For many, having a quick comparison table is what they look for. So, before reviewing these apps for proofreading, here is a comparison of Grammarly, Ginger, and WhiteSmoke. These are the top 3 free online proofreading tools with premium upgrades available.

1. Grammarly (for Mac, Smartphones, Windows, and online)
The first time I used Grammarly was in 2013, at that time, there was no real English proofreading software or application that helps especially in fixing WordPress writing. So, I wanted to give it a try and it was amazing in one word.
This is actually the best software for proofreading in 2022. It’s also the top-rated editing and grammar tool for writers, journalists, students, and bloggers. Even more, popular authors who are successful on Amazon and have bestseller ebooks on Kindle are using it.
So, there is no reason for not trying Grammarly, see how it works, what you can fix as errors, spelling, and grammar problems, and then, decide.
This online proofreading tool is free, however, the premium version is more helpful and detects more writing problems. Also, you can use it on Chrome, Safari, or Firefox through one of their extensions.
On the other hand, if you prefer the native apps, there is an application for Mac OS and also Windows.
That being said, I personally prefer using their browser extension that’s lightweight, fast, and doesn’t need any disk space.
I was looking for a good writing editor for Mac and came across Grammarly. So, I tried it and found it working faster than I expected.
Just make sure you install it if you write a lot, or just install the Safari extension and you’ll proofread your writing on Mac like a pro.
Unlike other popular writing apps, this one is the most sophisticated. It scans the text and understands d what you mean, and that prevents wrong suggestions.
The best part is that there is no automated correction. But the software automatically checks your text for errors and styling. That way, you get a full list of grammatical and spelling problems to fix with one click.
If you use your smartphone a lot, then, use their app on the go. And if you don’t want to install any app or extension, you still have the online editing tool, it’s a complete writing solution with features to have error-free writing.
The worst thing that a writer needs is to find that he copied a phrase from a website without even noticing that (that happens as we are all human). So, dealing with content that’s not original is not easy.
For that, there is a premium plagiarism detector with Grammarly. It scans the web and finds if your text is original or copied.
Now there are some cons and also pros to talk about:
Pros of Grammarly
- Voted the best grammar app
- Millions of users
- Proofreading program for any text online
- Used by well-known writers and bloggers
- The right option to proofread blog posts, newsletters, and sales pages.
- It comes in many versions: browser extension, mobile app, native desktop application
- Completely free to use, unless you need extra levels of checking, there is a premium version for you
- Over 400 checking points
- It’s the best writing software for Mac (super fast)
- Online essay proofreading
- Exclusive plagiarism checker (write with confidence, your text will be 100% original)
- Complete sentence checker
- Weekly reports include your progress, your common errors, and what to do to fix them
- It has a dedicated version for universities and students
- The user gets the definitions and synonyms of any word or phrase with double clicks
- You can access your personal advisor using the online account
- Microsoft Office integration
- If you add a new word that the software is unable to recognize, you can add it to your personal dictionary.
- You can use it to check your emails, Facebook posts, tweets, etc…
While it’s is my preferred editing and writing tool, it comes with some cons:
- You can only use it with an Internet connection (online)
- It won’t let you fix all the errors in WordPress and other sites unless you log in, luckily, it’s free anyway.
- The price may look expensive to many and even if some need an accurate proofreading tool that can be used online, they find themselves in the need to use the free version as the premium plan is not cheap.
Can you use Grammarly for free?
The editing software can be used completely for free. It offers what we all need as spell checking, punctuation fixing, and complete proofreading.
There are extra features that use their servers excessively and of course. That needs a lot of resources to maintain the best performances. So, in the premium account, you get an advanced contextual grammar check, plagiarism checker, and more.
In addition, there is an academic proofreading service that you can get into your account. Thus, Grammarly is the complete writing solution that combines different services for students and researchers.
Grammarly Professional proofreading cost
If you want to buy the premium plan, then, there is a good deal:
- The one billing of one year cost $139
- The monthly subscription cost is $29.95
- If you choose to pay Quarterly, the premium plan cost is 19.98/month with one payment of $59.95
- There are also plans for businesses, the cost will depend on the number of users ($10 per user monthly).
Grammarly premium vs free
Believe it or not, I know popular journalists who use the premium version and can’t publish a single document without clicking the check text button.
But that doesn’t mean that the free version is not worth it. You still be able to fix your writing and avoid common spelling mistakes like a pro. The differences between the free and the pro versions of Grammarly online proofreader are the following:
- The Grammarly premium version comes with advanced checking for punctuation, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.
- There are suggestions for vocabulary enhancement
- Advanced checks for your Genre-specific writing style
- Powerful plagiarism checker
The main idea here is this: if you need good free online proofreading software, and you don’t want to buy a premium plan, then choose Grammarly.
However, if you are really working hard and you write lots of articles, guides, or work as a freelance writer, then, I recommend investing in the premium version, it’s worth the subscription price. Or, if you need more details, you can read the Grammarly review and learn more about their options, solutions, and features. When there is a need for software that checks writing for Mac, this is the number one option.
Can Grammarly be trusted?
Even if Grammarly is on the top list of the best proofreading apps, it’s not perfect. After all, it’s a software that human updates with database entries and makes it work better over time. So, expect to find false positives from time to time, especially when you use new terms that appear on social media. That’s why you may use the add to dictionary feature to exclude words from being detected as wrong.
On the other side, you can enable your automated proofreading software. But always double-check the corrections. It’s not that easy for an algorithm to check the whole text and fix them like humans.
Is Grammarly secure?
The short answer is Yes. Grammarly is a trusted proofreading app that’s secure and well built by experts. There are real people and a team of engineers behind the scene that verify every feature of the program. So users who download the full Grammarly proofreading package should be safe and they can focus on their writing. Let experts in cloud engineering and software coding care about the security of the program that’s always at the highest levels for Mac, Windows, and even on your mobile phone.
2. Ginger Soft
This is one of the best Grammarly alternatives. If there is one website that checks your text for spelling and helps you fix the sentence structure, it will be Ginger. Grammarly is good, however, this writing editor works better for fixing the most common spelling and punctuation issues.
You should also have an idea about fixing grammar and punctuation issues. You’ll save a lot of time when using any app.
Like any other website, use it with care, don’t always click on every suggestion the app makes. Sometimes, you’ll find the wrong corrections that you need to ignore, and learning the writing principles and rules should be your first step.
Each online proofreading software has its own features, Ginger is better at detecting punctuation problems.
For that, if you want to write a novel or an ebook and have a fast, but accurate translation, then, get Ginger and save a lot of time. One of the best things that makes Ginger a recommended proofreading solution for the English language is its great spelling checker, punctuation check, and ease of use.
- It works well for spelling and punctuation
- There are windows and Mac versions
- The good online editing interface
- Translating tool
- Sentence rephrase
- Text reader
- It proofread your text on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Gmail, LinkedIn, Snapchat, TikTok, and more.
- Easy online proofreader
- The browser extension may not work with WordPress and other apps
- Ginger is copying Grammarly on everything they do, I know their software for years. And now, their pages, features, writing, and designs are copied.
Prices: In order to have no mistakes proofreading with Ginger, it’s better to go with their premium plan. The free tool works, but not that much. So, here is an overview of the Ginger prices.
- The one-year plan cost $89.88
- The monthly plan cost is $20.97
- The Quarterly plans cost $13.00/month with one payment of $40.97
The free version of Ginger proofreader works and detects lots of spelling errors that other tools neglect. However, if you want a professional proofreading test with Ginger, then, use their premium plan, it has more checking levels. So, the text will be scanned better and more recommendations will be in the report. That being said, I found Ginger also good in technical-specific words that many online proofreading tools never know about.
WhiteSmoke is one of the best English writing tools in the market, it has multiple systems that correct your writing anytime you need.
This advanced software that proofreads paragraphs and texts received appreciation, positive feedback, and thumb ups from the world’s best writers for its linguistic capabilities and ease of use.
WhiteSmoke is also recommended for writers who publish a lot of content. It’s a complete editing solution that comes with many good features including:
- Grammar checker
- Style checker
- It works with Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.
- Spell checker
- Online punctuation check
I wanted to see if they have a mobile app, and surprisingly, WhiteSmoke can be used through a good mobile app that you can install from Google Play or the App Store. That’s what makes it one of the best tools to check writing for grammar, vocabulary, and spelling on smartphones and mobile devices.
WhiteSmoke Mobile app
Now, even if this is a popular software for proofreaders, you should always verify the corrections. It’s not perfect and every writer should double-check what the software suggests as writing correction.
This is another type of editing tool that you can use to proofread text in 20 different languages. Unlike other tools, this one checks the paper for style, spelling checking, and more. For English, this tool comes with a specific check for American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and British English. So, you don’t have to worry about words that you think are spoken commonly in your country and not in other places.
The free version of LanguageTool offers basic proofreading. But the premium version and the developer plan offer access to their API which can be useful for building a custom application that integrates proofreading into their publishing platforms.
The premium plan offers all the good features of the software that authors and web agencies can use to correct grammar and fix punctuation the right way.
Because there is an offline version of LanguageTool, this will be a good proofreading tool for writers who move a lot and who don’t want to rely on Internet connections all the time. So, no matter where they are, they can proofread their documents even when traveling worldwide.
For online integrations, Language Tools has a good Google Docs integration, Chrome extension, LibreOffice add-on. But there is no dedicated version for Mac. Also, the offline proofreading software is not that good as it’s not designed to find lots of writing issues like what the Grammarly tool does.
With PaperRater you can enjoy the use of easy software that helps to fix common grammar and spelling issues for legal documents and lawyers. There is an option to check the text for a specific genre and adjust the levels. For example, the following options let you make writing and editing better.
You can choose the author level of the document you want to proofread, from 1rt grade to 12th grade, College, Graduate School, Masters, or doctorate. That way, things work better and you’ll avoid false positives, but that has a limit and it’s not the perfect proofreading tool.
This is another software to check paragraphs online. So, you can’t use it without an Internet connection, and they show lots of ads to monetize their site. But for documents, you can choose from different writing purposes and document types like CV/Resumes, blog posts, personal or even business correspondence documents, and emails.
6. Proofreading Tool
This is a paid software that checks and corrects paragraphs online. In fact, there are dozens of good features that work well. For example, the software check for
- Passive phrases
- Duplicate words
- British and American spelling
- Long confusing phrases
- Wrong punctuations
- Colloquialisms and more
When you want to proofread an essay, for example, add the text and the tool will add colorful highlights, these are the things to correct in your paragraphs and by reading the details. You can see if that’s really wrong or a false positive.
This software can check different types of documents like eBooks, essays, articles, research papers, and more. But you have to download the document after proofreading it or select all the text and paste it into your preferred editing tool. There are no tools that check-writing on social media like Grammarly, so, use it for the right professional use only.
7. Hemingway App
When it comes to accuracy, the Hemingway App is good at finding complex phrases that should not be neglected. The online editing software checks for adverbs, spelling, and punctuation issues. You can download their desktop tool if you prefer, but the online editing work anyway.
Because it’s like an editing and proofreading tool at once, you can use the Hemingway App to add numbers, bullets, heading and even links in the text. But compared to Grammarly and Ginger, it’s not better, but useful enough to try it and fix many writing issues.
If you want an easy-to-use and free proofreading app for windows computers, then, try Outwrite. Even if it’s not that advanced like Grammarly and Ginger, it offers good spell checking and grammar check for personal uses. On the other hand, if you’d like to proofread your text for professional use, I don’t think that Outwrite will be the right tool to use as it’s not accurate in many cases. Yet, it’s still a free proofreading tool that works and you can try.
Outwrite vs Grammarly
When comparing outwrite to Grammarly, you’ll find that Grammarly is better, faster and a professional proofreading software for writers. That’s because of the long list of features and the years of experience. Those algorithms work blazingly fast and detect more issues in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. That’s without talking about fixing complex sentence structures.
That being said, Outwrite is a free proofreading software. So, you can always try it and compare its features to other tools like Grammarly.
Outwrite is a good alternative to Grammarly for fixing grammar issues and punctuations. Many authors tried the program and it worked well for them. The paid version of GradeProof comes with the following options:
- Grammar check
- Capitalization check
- Custom dictionary
- Plagiarism tool with 50 checks per month as maximum
Unlike other proofreading websites and editing tools, Typely is free to use online with no downloads. However, it does not do a grammar check, and of course, it helps with punctuation and spelling correction. So, there is no reason why not to try it. The website does not offer a premium version and it looks like their goal is to keep proofreading free on their site.
10. Intelligent Editing
The Intelligent Editing website offers online proofreading software for professionals. So, you may try it to check for legal-specific Typos, hyphens, dashes, spelling, consistency, and more. For use, it’s not the best that offers a modern user experience. But, it does the job and lets you find errors in the document and correct them. The software has a premium version called PerfectIt, it costs $70 for a single license.
Perfectit vs Grammarly
There is no doubt that Perfect is good for English writers. But it’s not even at the same level of professionalism as Grammarly. Grammarly is more powerful and combines hundreds of complicated search technologies that detect the smallest wring issues and highlight them.
If you’re not sure which one you should use then, all these are the best proofreading tools. But if you think that you’ll write a lot of content, then, choose the first option on the list.
Who needs such proofreading and editing tools?
In today’s world of social media, it becomes a little harder to fix sentences when writing a comment on Facebook, or replying to an email or other. That’s not only because of the time we need to proofread a text and check all the spelling without missing a single error. However, as humans are not perfect, we all also make writing mistakes. And a misspelled word can change the meaning of the email or comment we write.
That’s why using the best English proofreading software is not only a need for writers and essays, but also for fixing the daily writing issues.
Everyone who writes online should use good software that fixes writing and corrects comment punctuation problems like commas and others.
If you’re writing an ebook, then, chances are, you’ll miss lots of issues with sentence structure, punctuation, and even a simple missing common can cause a problem on the whole page. So, why not proofread your ebook using software online? It will be much better, and you’ll save a lot of time manually checking every sentence. Of course, you have to approve the corrections, but the checking will be faster than doing that manually word by word.
Grammarly proofreading software vs Ginger
In reality, Grammarly is much better in online text editing and proofreading. I noticed that the Ginger online proofreading software is copying the first one’s marketing strategy like promotions, banners, etc…However, Ginger is better at identifying unknown spelling issues like missing letters and it works better in some cases.
But you don’t need to use the premium version of Ginger as that spelling check option is already offered in the free version. So, install Grammarly and use Ginger online checker if you think that you’re going to make lots of hidden spelling problems.
For iOS, Ginger does not offer a dedicated version. However, Grammarly offers advanced proofreading software for mac users. So, you can install their native app and start checking your text online. On the other side, Ginger offers an extension for Google Chrome and Safari. Thus, you still have the option to use their Mac proofreading software and even more, there is a dedicated version of the tool for iOS mobile devices like iPhone and iPad.
WhiteSmoke or Grammarly?
I used WhiteSmoke before even hearing about Grammarly. So, it’s older and it should have a better experience in identifying writing style problems, spelling mistakes, etc…Unfortunately, WhiteSmoke did not use the long years of experience to develop better grammar checking algorithms for English, there are many ways to improve the system to check grammar, punctuation, and fix errors better.
So, compared to Grammarly, WhiteSmoke is unable to detect the same errors and help the user in learning more about his mistakes and fixing them. Even more, Grammarly is better in use and you can install it on web browsers or use the native app for Windows or Mac.
Now, if we compare both proofreading websites, then, we should say that the first option is better than WhiteSmoke.
What software do proofreaders use?
Because it’s so popular and accurate, many professional writers are using Grammarly in the first place. It’s the top-rated and best proofreading software. And that’s not only because it’s better than others. But also because there is a human proofreading service offered for those who need advanced text correction. However, using Grammarly in combination with a free version of other tools should also work well for bloggers and social media users.
For academic writers, Grammarly has one of the most sophisticated proofreading algorithms. So, it’s not a surprise to find the app installed on millions of laptops and mobile phones.
That being said, Ginger and Whitesmoke are also better proofreading software than all the others when it comes to spelling checking, punctuation, sentence structure, and of course, they’re easy to use.
Choosing the right proofreading software
As you can see, each one of these good writing editing software comes with advantages and disadvantages.
So, there is no perfect program that fixes all your text errors and works better than human editing. However, when it comes to saving time, having a good writing experience, there is one recommended solution and it’s Grammarly. It’s a professional proofreading software that works with all types of websites. And it came with a free version and also a premium account for extended features.
On the other hand, like all the other options, the app won’t work offline. That’s one of the worst things about any program.
If we look closely, we’ll find that in order to have an offline corrector tool for your text, we need a big size of the software that no personal computer can work with.
In reality, Grammarly has a huge database of data that needs lots of servers to work and fix your text. So, thinking that way, we need to keep in mind that there is no offline proofreading solution that can work unless you have data centers and millions of dollars to invest in it.
If you think that you have more spelling problems than grammar, then, Ginger will be your best solution. It works well and it’s good for spelling and punctuation checkers. The free online proofreading tool detects lots of common spelling issues and helps you fix them.
Now, if you’re one of those who write lots of content on Facebook, social media and use a smartphone all day, then, choosing WhiteSmoke is better for you. The mobile app works well, no matter if you also have a fast Internet connection.
Now, the right option I think everyone should use is Grammarly. It lets you check your online text and fix all the writing issues with a few clicks of the button. In addition, it’s the right tool that improves writing skills for writers, authors, and everyone.
